In Memphis, this is already taking shape through stronger coordination around the transition from high school to college, training, and careers. Through the Memphis Area Presidents’ Council, local college and university leaders are working toward stronger regional alignment around college access and increased completion rates. TN Achieves also plays an important role by helping students navigate college enrollment, financial aid, and persistence, providing the kind of hands-on support that can make postsecondary pathways more accessible and attainable.
At the same time, our partners at Cradle to Career TN will be working with other place-based cradle to career partnerships to implement this framework and also partner with state policy makers, TN SCORE, and others to strengthen incentives for pathways that lead to in-demand, living-wage jobs. That approach also fits the broader direction of More for Memphis: connecting advising, postsecondary opportunity, and employer-informed pathways so students can move more smoothly from high school into credentials and careers with economic value. And importantly, Tennessee now has a stronger policy foundation for this kind of work, as TISA includes direct funding for both career and technical education and postsecondary readiness.
Ultimately, building purposeful pathways is not just about helping students choose what comes next. It is about making sure every young person has a real shot at a future with stability, opportunity, and mobility. If Memphis can continue aligning schools, colleges, employers, and community partners around that goal, we can move closer to a system where students do not have to rely on luck or individual persistence alone to find their way. Instead, they can graduate with clearer options, stronger support, and a more direct path to a life of economic opportunity.
