<image:caption>I'm from St. Louis, Missouri. My mom [Bobbie Watkins] is from a small town that doesn't even exist anymore. It's called Swift. She is one of 10 children, and she actually had 10 children. She lost two, so there were seven of us by the time I came around. So she had eight that she raised. She was a teenage mom, and she married fairly young and moved to St. Louis. Then her mom passed when she was 25, so she ended up taking five of her younger siblings and bringing them to St. Louis to raise them. Through all of that, my mom eventually became a single mom. When I think about women who inspire me, she is just like the forefront of everything because I talk to her a lot, and I know about her struggles as a child and coming up in what is beyond poverty with so many siblings. Her mom was eventually a single mom as well, and understanding the hardships, even through all of that, she just always put family first. She had her own children and she still raised five of her younger siblings because she refused to have them split up […] but she did all of that, and she got her GED when she was in her late thirties, early forties, and always just pushed to do everything that she could do for her family. [My uncles and aunts] are just genuinely living full lives, happy people. And I think it was because of her and what she did. It grounded all of us into placing the importance on that which is important, which is the people in our lives and not things that may or may not be of value in the long run.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My mentor in grad school was Dr. Ruthbeth Finerman, and she was phenomenal. She was a mentor for me in the anthropology department at [the University of Memphis] as I was kind of transitioning out of [...] majoring in biology and was struggling with wanting to find something that was a little more human-centered work. I was still interested in science, kind of an overlap with health, but really was starting to explore other social science classes. At the time, her expertise was in medical anthropology, which I had never heard of before, and it's very much human-centered and understanding from a qualitative perspective or interview or storytelling lens of how different perceptions, culture, experiences affect someone's health beyond just social determinants of health or beyond Western medicine and influence. So that alone was just a very fascinating focus area and field that I had not been exposed to before. That wasn't the path I ended up pursuing, but she also was very influential as far as what to do with my life and navigating grad school, navigating finances, understanding how to find my place in Memphis beyond just academia. I knew I wanted to work in Memphis, and she was a big proponent of that. Aside from just the mentorship of things, she was just a delightful person. She brought so much joy and passion to everything she did and every interaction she had with people. That really is also something I carry with me, especially these days. It’s easy to carry a lot of the burden in this work and field we do, but she chose joy in everything she did. Some days, it feels like the more radical thing to do is to actively choose to find joy in your life, so I try to carry that.</image:caption>

<image:title>Theory of Transformation - What Does System Change Look Like?</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the past five years, Seeding Success has worked with local and national experts to create a system of support for children from prenatal to age eight. First 8 Memphis, previously referred to as Shelby County Early Childhood Education Plan (SCECEP), aligns and scales comprehensive programs that propel children toward kindergarten readiness and 3rd grade literacy in order to improve outcomes for our community’s most vulnerable families.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Purpose SWOT, which stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threat, is an analysis to evaluate a project, a process, or an entire organization. It ensures that the project, process, or organization remains updated with external opportunities and risks. For instance, it helps the organization: Define the internal strengths to be further maintained or developed. Define the internal weaknesses to be adapted or addressed. Define the external opportunities that the organization can leverage. Define the external threats that the organization can be prepared for or find ways to minimize the risks. The SWOT analysis can be developed after deciding on the project/organization’s objectives or before finalizing a strategy. The SWOT analysis should be revisited whenever changes occur in the environment, such as changes in legislation, policies, and the organizations’ objectives.</image:caption>

When a root cause is removed or addressed, the undesirable effects, or symptoms will no longer be present. Related Tools A Root Cause Analysis may be performed after contributing factors to a problem are identified using a Fishbone Diagram or Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA). These early insights provided a foundation for a life of continuous learning. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering Technology and a Doctorate of Education with a concentration in Higher and Adult Education from The University of Memphis. He began his career as an educational professional at The University of Arkansas – Fayetteville and Little Rock, Fisk and Christian Brothers University and Rhodes College. In 2013, Brown switched careers to join First Horizon Bank and now serves as the Chief Talent Development Officer. Currently, he serves as a member of the National Alumni Board of Directors and Past-President of the Black Alumni Chapter. Brown has served as an International board member in the capacity of Coordinator of the Sigma Beta Clubs, International Standards and Awards Committee chair, Liaison for the March of Dimes and Liaison Chair for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. In recognition of service to his fraternity and community, he was honored with the highest recognition for his region, the Distinguished Service Chapter. He helped to start and serves as a Senior Facilitator for the Embark program at the New Memphis Institute. In 2017, Brown was selected as a speaker for TEDx where he shared his ideas on “The Possibility of People”. Today, he continues to lead from purpose in assisting with the development of talent throughout the organization. Brown is grounded with the assistance of many people, most importantly his wife, Bridget, and his three kids, Maya (11), Laila (8) and Zeke (6).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Arielle Williams - POLICY Advisor</image:title>
<image:caption>Born and raised in the “M-town”, Arielle developed a devout passion for social justice at an early age by being a very shy, yet very observant, student in and out of the classroom. She discovered an affinity for understanding diverse opinions through debate and socratic seminars, learning to grow out of her shell and developing a voice, not just for herself but also for her quieter peers. Though Arielle’s shyness eventually went away, her passion persevered through her high school career at White Station High School. She used her keen interest in subjects such as English and History to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies from Tennessee State University. In 2021, she graduated from the College of Public Service as valedictorian—and as a first generation student! After navigating her first year post-graduation through numerous roles in the service industry, she got her big break with Seeding Success in the summer of 2022 as the Special Policy Assistant. When not joking around with her big brothers, Morris and Elijah, she enjoys going out to eat with her aunts, falling down Wikipedia rabbit holes, and using research to enrich her fiction writing projects.</image:caption>
